Two more wins and United are up!

BEXHILL United manager Bill Trivett believes his team requires maximum points from their final two games this weekend to secure the runners-up berth in Division Three.

A 2-0 win Bexhill over Haywards Heath Town on Saturday allied to a 2-1 reverse for third-placed Lingfield against Uckfield Town means that United are now seven points ahead of their rivals, although the Surrey club still have four games remaining. Bexhill have actually returned to the top of the division, but second-placed Storrington are only a point behind and have four games in hand.

The race for second, which in all probability would ensure promotion although that would still have to be ratified by the Sussex County League, could be all over this weekend.

Home victories for Bexhill against Bosham tomorrow (Saturday) and Uckfield on Monday would guarantee a top two finish. Not that it matters if Bexhill win, but Lingfield do not have a league fixture this weekend as they face Rustington Sports in the Sussex Division Three Challenge Cup final today.

"It's there for us to do," Trivett said. "Two wins and they can't touch us now, that would be a perfect finish to a long nine months. But we need six points, four would leave us waiting for other teams to slip-up.

"I think it's a make or break weekend, though I wouldn't say our future depends on it.

"I don't think there's any more pressure on us than there is on anyone else. We've beaten both these sides, but you do have to be on top of your game every time you play these sides, otherwise they will pick you off. We've had two very difficult games against Uckfield (Bexhill won their away league fixture, but lost at home in the opening round of the Sussex Division Three Challenge Cup) and there's still a little glimmer there that they can nick that second spot."

United are hopeful that Wes Tate and Darren Witham (both medial knee ligaments) will be fit for tomorrow to join a pretty much full strength squad.

This season's meetings: Bosham 1 Bexhill 3 (D. Carey 2, M. Funnell), Bexhill 1 (Mote) Uckfield 2 (Sussex Division Three Challenge Cup, 1st round), Uckfield 0 Bexhill 2 (M. Funnell, Tate).

p SIDLEY United manager Andy Laskey says this weekend will be the most significant of their season to date.

The Blues face two crucial matches in their bid to beat the drop from Sussex Division One, in the form of a trip to second-bottom East Grinstead Town tomorrow (Saturday), and a visit from Redhill on Monday.

"I would say it's our biggest weekend of the season," Laskey commented. "If we can get six points that will put us well clear of it. But if we get nothing, it will be nothing short of a disaster. There's a good atmosphere at the moment and eveyone's fighting together. Confidence is quite high and, without a doubt, Liam (Barham) has had an influence already."

They were defensively fine during a "very good" friendly performance against Sussex Division Two neighbours Westfield on Tuesday night. Adie Kettyles (2) and Kevin Rose scored the goals in a 3-0 win.

Their attack will be perked up by the signing of former Hastings Town (now United), Eastbourne Borough and Horsham forward Simon Ullathorne.

"A massive signing," was how Laskey described the capture of a player who has not played this season due to injury. "If he declares himself fit, he will go straight in on Saturday." Both matches kick-off at noon.

Rose, Kettyles and Graham Morris scored in the seconds' 3-2 win over Oakwood on Saturday, which has lifted them out of the bottom four in Reserve Section Premier. They play host to Southwick tomorrow (3pm) before visiting Eastbourne Town on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
