United earn their spurs

BEXHILL United Ladies took on the might of Tottenham Hotspur in front of their biggest crowd of the season on Sunday.

And they came within touching distance of an historic win over the famous London club only to be denied by a free kick in the final two minutes as the match finished in a 2-2 draw.

Manager Bill Trivett nonetheless said it was his young side's best performance to date in the Premier Division of the London & SE Counties League.

Fifth-placed Bexhill started the brighter, creating chance after chance against a Tottenham side which managed only one shot at goal in the first half.

Spurs opened the scoring, however, within five minutes of the resumption. But Bexhill hit back 10 minutes later when Katie Wilde swung in a free kick for player of the match Beth Richardson to divert the ball into the back of the net.

With 10 minutes remaining, Bexhill took the lead through Faye Denyer much to the annoyance of the Tottenham goalkeeper.

Sixth-placed Tottenham were then reduced to 10 players for a second bookable offence, but still managed to conjure up a late equaliser.
