United fail but Lancers and Swans revive

SOCCER IN County League Division 2 came a step closer to Worthing United after they lost on Easter Monday away to the team above them in the three Division 1 relegation spots.

Second-bottom Mavericks fell 3-2 away to Rye & Iden United after trailing inside two minutes, then leading 2-1 by the 35th with a Gavin Geddes equaliser and a Warren Levy goal. Rye scored twice in five minutes with 21 minutes to go.

Our two clubs striving to avoid dropping out of Division 2 into intermediate football both drew.

Second-bottom Lancing led leaders Pagham with a Rob Partridge header in the 25th minute, only to have Jamie Quinlan sent off 10 minutes later. The 10 men were then caught on the break in the 87th minute and substitute Michael Frangou stole Pagham's 1-1 equaliser.

Storrington's 0-0 draw against Southwick was their second successive draw but their first shut-out for more than a month.

Second-bottom Lancing have two games in hand on the three clubs above them (two go down), who are Crawley Down, who drew at Sidlesham to stay level on points with Lancing, Storrington (four points ahead), and Broadbridge Heath (five points ahead) who became the latest team to upend free-falling East Grinstead Town.

The last catchable club could be Lingfield, also five points ahead. They lost at Midhurst but like Lancing have played two games less than their rivals.
