WALKING TITLE TO SURREY

A BITING and strong East wind made fast times out of the question in the Southern 20km walking championships at Littlehampton on Saturday.

The field was depleted by winter ailments, and the main sufferers were Steyning hope Gareth Brown and another international, Bob Dobson.

Fancied Surrey walker Chris Cheeseman started very quickly and had soon built up a lead of about 50 to 60 yards over clubmate Mark Easton.

This lead was maintained until about halfway through the 20km race, when Cheeseman began to feel the results of his early efforts. Easton then began to haul him in and by the last lap had overtaken him and established a considerable lead which he maintained to the finish.
