Work gets underway on new all-season local tennis facilities

The refurbishment scheme, which will see £255,000 invested in the new courts, has been made possible with funding from Worthing Borough Council.

The improvements at Field Place Manor House & Barns will include the full reconstruction of the courts with a permeable sub-base and surfacing, to create all-weather playing facilities. The new courts will be finished in a Wimbledon-style colour scheme of green surround and purple courts.

The six full sized tennis courts will also include different court markings for junior tennis training and four netball courts.

Cllr Edward Crouch, Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for Digital and Environmental Services, said: “I’m delighted that work to create all-weather tennis courts at Field Place is getting underway. This is part of the Council’s commitment to invest in improving our sporting facilities and encouraging more people to reap the health and wellbeing benefits gained from engaging in sport.”

The tennis courts will be closed from Monday 6 July for the contractors to start the improvement works, and will reopen in September. Tennis players will be able to use the courts at Church House Grounds in Tarring, which can be booked through South Downs Leisure from 6 July, and Davison Leisure Centre, when it reopens, during the period of refurbishment. Six new tennis courts are also available, to book online, at Homefield Park.

Duncan Anderson, CEO of South Downs Leisure who run the tennis courts situated at The Boulevard, Worthing as part of the town’s leisure offering said: “We are really excited to be upgrading the surface of the tennis courts at Field Place. This ongoing period of uncertainty has highlighted that physical activity is essential, whilst also showcasing to us just how important these courts are to local tennis lovers. We are pleased to be working with Worthing Borough Council to improve these facilities, so that they can be enjoyed all year round.”
