Worthing rowers shine on rough seas

With onshore winds of up to 15mph, the ride was going to be bumpy and there were several capsizes, particularly in the single sculls races where the boats are finer and harder to balance.

Worthing’s novice men of Chris Whinnet, Sam Botting, Zolli Hercz and Dima Parfoot, coxed by Nathan Keogh, had been practicing in choppy waters. The training paid off when they romped home to win their first novice men’s race in rough seas.

They now need one more win to collect their novice medals and move up to junior men’s status.

Leah Colclough won the ladies single sculls, which was a feat indeed in the most unstable boat of the day. She remains unbeaten this year.

Jordan Simper and Sophie McKewan partnered for the first time in the ladies doubles race and finished a promising second.

Worthing Rowing Club welcomes new members. Anyone interested in taking up the sport can pop down to the club house at Splashpoint, Marine Parade (not the swimming pool) on club nights, Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm.
