Worthing went into their penultimate match of the season needing just three points to clinch the title and picked up eight, in a 75-72 victory away to last year’s champions, Pavilion A.

They have sealed the title with 13 wins and just two defeats from the 15 games they have played so far, with their final match at home to Pavilion B on Saturday.

Worthing president George Youngs was delighted with the title success and said: “We are all chuffed to bits to win the league.

“It wasn’t something we were expecting at the start of the season, we thought it might be Chichester or Pavilion who would win it.

“It was a good day on Saturday, though, and we’ve won it with a small squad, who have all kept together and gelled well.

“It’s nice to have won it with a game to spare, so we’ll go into the last game with no pressure and will just go out and enjoy it. It’s the first time we’ve ever won it and we’ll do our best to try to defend it next year now.”

Worthing began the season with back-to-back wins, before a 75-74 home defeat to Bognor A, despite picking up five points.

That sparked three successive maximum point wins as Worthing went on a six-game winning run.

A 86-64 reverse at Southbourne followed, despite success on two rinks, before Saturday’s win was Worthing’s fifth on the bounce to lift the title.

Worthing won on three of the four rinks on Saturday as Chris Young was victorious 22-15, Graham Ives won 26-17 and Malcolm Palmer claimed a 23-16 success, while Russ Hallett went down 24-4.

It was not such a good day for Worthing’s B side on Saturday in Division 2 as they took just two points from a 85-75 loss at Pagham.

Ted Poole was Worthing’s only winning skip, 35-10, as Alan Grief lost 26-12, Richard Barrett went down 24-17 and Trevor Gordine suffered a 25-11 reverse.
