Young Beth's leading miler

Local athletes dominated the inaugural Phoenix one-mile races in Stanmer Park, winning the under-13 girls's, the senior men's and the veterans's events.

The Maresfield Kidger twins Beth and Megan filled first and second in the under-13s. The pair had broken clear of the rest of the field by half-distance, and it was Beth who eventually raced on to win by some 30 yards in six minutes to Megan's 6:11.

At the end of the afternoon Sussex Downs College's Dan Stepney, who is gradually getting back to his early-season track form following injury, took on county 5,000 metres bronze medallist Joel Clewett from Crawley.

It was Stepney's basic two-lap speed that took him clear over the final quarter-mile to clock 4:40 to finish five seconds clear.

There was a third local winner as Hailsham's David Coulson had a great battle with Crawley's Dave Rayner for the vet's title.

The pair battled head-to-head until the final quarter-mile when the Hailsham man pushed hard to win in 5:02, with the Crawley runner being caught and passed by Nick Brown from Hastings, who clocked 5:08.
