Young Rebels rule the Ryman!

WORTHING Football Club's youngbloods have won the Ryman League's Westview Youth Cup.

They beat Croydon Athletic 2-0 on their own Woodside Road ground after the league decided the use of Worthing's ground would solve the problem of finding an alternative venue positioned between the two clubs that was available this late in the season.

Jason Winch struck in first-half stoppage time and Jamie Brotherton made it two late in the second. Again, keeper Steve Phillips, this time against the best side Rebels have met in the competition, was the difference between Worthing prospering and their opponents getting seriously into the contest with a goal.

Stuart Axten, Worthing's Sussex Senior Cup Final centre-half, took over the captaincy that Jason Winch assumed in Axten's absence which lasted until the previous round. Rebels were again without James Fraser, their England Schools international, among three significant unavailabilities.

The gate this time was 179.
