It proved to be a busy day for the duo as the final, against Buckinghamshire’s Carole Robertson and Pamela Armstrong, was their third match of the day.

The Field Place duo, representing Sussex, played with team-mates Tina Phillips and Shelia Lock in the morning but went out of the national fours in the first round by a shot, 20-19 to Biggleswade, from Bedfordshire.

There was little time to rest before Woodcock and Davies were back on the green to take on Oxfordshire’s Carol Gaskins and Carol Penson in the semi-finals of the senior pairs.

The Field Place pair reached the final with a 27-24 victory and then lifted the trophy with a 24-23 victory.

Woodcock and Davies stormed into a 19-7 lead in the final, but Robertson and Armstrong fought back to go into the 20th end 23-19 down, at which point they scored four shots to level the scores going into the final end.

However, Woodcock and Davies scored the vital shot to secure the title and take the trophy back to the south coast.
