Danny Bacon, director of Legend Presents, which puts on the Loxwood Joust, said: “We are still planning to open the first two weekends of August and deliver this great festival that everyone has come to love, providing it is safe for us to do so.

“We are constantly monitoring the situation very closely and will let everyone know if anything changes.”

Billed as the “most spectacular medieval festival in the realm”, it is planned to take place on Loxwood Meadow on August 1-2 and August 8-9, featuring full-contact jousting, a living history village, witches, a full battle enactment and running characters and storylines year on year.

Danny said: “Loxwood Joust has become a beloved summer staple for thousands of families over the years, a pair of August weekends they can spend out in the open, immersed in the world of Queen Katheryn and her faithful knights, learning mediaeval skills and history.

“Entering the site, visitors leave the modern world behind as they enter the living history village situated in the Medieval Meadow, where inhabitants live and work exactly as they would have in the Middle Ages.

“Peruse their traditional wares in the Medieval Marketplace, where traders and hawkers vie for your attention and wandering minstrels, dance troupes, and a court jester entertain the crowds throughout the day.

“Full-contact jousting happens twice each day, along with displays of weaponry, archery, falconry and cannon fire in the battle staged by re-enactors. The Woodland stage hosts live performances from The Sultan’s Sirens belly dancers, Trobar De Morte (Weekend Two) and Mediaeval Baebes (Weekend One).

“The Children’s Kingdom is a festival within the festival, where kids (and adults) can try archery, go for face and wound painting, pelt the peasant and enrol in knight school.

"Additional bookable adult activities include chainmail workshops, copper bowl making and a medieval feast in the Grand Banqueting Marquee.”

The Loxwood Joust has been running as an annual event since 2012, when Maurice Bacon bought seven meadows surrounded by woodland in Loxwood,. 2020 marks the ninth annual festival, now spread across two weekends in August, and co-run by Maurice’s son Danny.
