Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X - review

FLYING around in fast planes and shooting things has been fun since the heady arcade days of Afterburner.

But the modern gaming world requires a bit more plot for your pound, hence the involvement of global conflict thriller scribe supreme, Tom Clancy, in Ubisoft's latest release.

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X features a fertile mix of top notch aircraft, international intrigue and gorgeous graphics, lovingly dusted with a sprinkling of multiplayer fun.

It looks good, sounds good, and plays well, with the controls very comfortable to use and exotic cities lovingly crafted using satellite technology.

The 19-level campaign sees you assume the role of US fighter ace David Crenshaw and his battles with the private warmongers Artemis Global Security (who also happen to be his employers - to start with, anyway).

A handy autopilot system - the Enhanced Reality System (ERM) - lets you hand over the controls to the machine if you feel yourself getting in too deep.

It can feel a bit like an easy get-out clause at times, and personal man-points clock up considerably when you deliberately resist, but it's a great way to keep the game accessible.

Bonus weapons and shiny new planes are available for success in the various online modes, but they don't really give you anything you can do without in the main campaign, which makes it a little too easy to stay away once you've completed it.

It's far from the deepest game on the market - it's almost a Clancy comic book compared to the novels of Endwar and Ghost Recon - but it's probably the most fun you'll ever have at 30,000ft.

7/10
