THEATRE: Buttons in Worthing

Theatre Akimbo will be performing the monologue among other events going on throughout the day to launch the start of their residency at the venue in Chapel Road which is now opened as a cultural, community and arts centre.

Buttons is written by award-winning Ella Hickson and forms part of the award-winning Eight which premired at Edinburgh Fringe in 2008.

Presented in Theatre Akimbo's trademark innovative style and with strong language, it illustrates a snippet of a man's life who suffers from a niche syndrome.

Artistic director Glenda Harkess said: "Theatre Akimbo, formed in 2008 promising to deliver theatre that is relevant, inventive, original and leading edge in its genre, and are delighted to bring their brand of fringe theatre to this exciting venue.

"This free event also showcases traditional Chinese lion dancing, flamenco, interactive arts, kung fu, stalls and much more.

"Buttons is a very powerful piece of theatre and is perfect illustration of the type of challenging, thought-provoking theatre that we are about.

"Having looked at length for a fringe performance venue in the town, we are thrilled to be involved with St Paul's.

"It is a beautiful, versatile space that has the flexibility to be used in imaginative and innovative ways.

"We have an exciting programme of projects and workshops throughout 2010, which complement the ethos of St Paul's being both a community centre and a cultural arts centre.

Theatre Akimbo will be performing Buttons in The Cube at St Paul's on Saturday, January 9, at 11am and 3pm.

Entry to the whole event is free.

Hille Cook, manager at St Paul's Centre, is hoping the day will launch the venue in style. Events run from 10am-5pm at the former church at 55b Chapel Road, Worthing, 10am-5pm.

Hille said: "St Paul's will be packed with stalls and displays, offering free tasters of St Paul's regular fitness and well-being sessions, interactive arts and handicraft projects, and theatre performances.

"Relaxing lunchtime jazz piano will soothe diners at St Paul's Lime Cafe enjoying freshly cooked organic meals and Fairtrade refreshments, followed by an afternoon of intriguing traditional kung fu displays and dazzling and vibrant performances by flamenco, ballet and Chinese lion dancers. Free entry all day.
