Parents of year six pupils are shocked after discovering their children had not been given places at a Shoreham secondary school '“ but at one 12 miles away in Storrington.

Mother of two Kelly Wickson hoped her son Jimmy – who is currently at Swiss Gardens Primary School – would go to Shoreham Academy, an ‘outstanding’ rated school.

She called the situation ‘a complete mess up’.

“We expected our children to go to school in the town where they live,” said the 39-year-old, of Connaught Avenue.

She had put Steyning Grammar School down as her second preference, but had ‘no idea’ Jimmy could be allocated to the school’s new satellite campus in Rock Road, Storrington – a two bus journey ride away.

Travelling such a long distance is a ‘safety issue’ she said, adding that Jimmy would have less time to do his homework because of the commute.

She said: “We would never have applied to Steyning Grammar if we knew there was a possibility that our child would be expected to do a 24 mile round trip to Storrington.”
